The earth rumbled softly as Vasile strode down the streets of his little home in North Carolina. The young teenager - only about eighteen - clearly didn't have a care in the world as he walked along, green eyes lost in thought. He turned to cross the crosswalk, waiting until the light said that he was allowed to cross. Vasile strode into the middle of the street when his entire existence changed in the blink of an eye.
Some driver who'd decided to ignore the red light - or perhaps he'd looked away for a second - careened through the crosswalk, the bumper of the silver car slamming into the form of Vasile. The fragile human buckled beneath the metal monster, bones shattering on impact. His head cracked sharply against the ground as the car skidded over him, one of the tires pressing down on his chest and stomach as it drive right over the little human's body. Black spots danced across Vasile's gaze, breath hard to come by. Dimly, he heard the cries and screams of the onlookers, the screech of the driver's brakes as the car skidded to a stop, the click as the driver forced the door open and came running to the broken boy's side. At the edges of his vision, blackness crept, inching along to slowly engulf the light of the midday sun above him. He heard the driver vehemently apologize, repeating the word 'sorry' many times - the number of times was deemed unimportant to Vasile's mind. It had been jarred when he'd slammed his skull to the earth, and now blood was pooling between his skull and brain, causing dangerous pressure to build up. He felt someone grab his hand, little fingers curling around his larger one, heard someone say help was coming. The wail of sirens was so loud, he thought dimly, but so distant. He tried to breath, but something was blocking his airway, clogging his lungs. He tried to talk, but no words would come up.
He felt someone try and lift him, apologizing for the pain, but he felt nothing; he was floating, free and unattached to the mortal coil he'd inhabited not two minutes before. The paramedics laid him on the stretcher; he watched from afar, looking down on his broken form. He was in his body, but he wasn't; he watched - and felt - them put him in the ambulance, felt them hook him up the machines and start to category his injuries. "Broken ribs, broken back; blood is flooding his lungs. Possible major head injury; won't know until CT scan."
A wild beeping filled the vehicle.
"He's gone into cardiac arrest. Jump his heart!"
Something jolted. His body twitched slightly as electricity slammed through him in an attempt to restart his heart. It faltered again, and they jolted him once more.
The beeping became a constant sound, the only one that Vasile heard as all else faded away. The blackness swamped him, and no matter how much he tried to push against it, tried to fight it back, it washed him away.
Silence.
In the ambulance, the paramedics set their equipment aside and shook their heads. "Deceased. TOD: approximately two-thirty in the afternoon, Wednesday, June 24th, 2014. What a shame."

Ember smiled, it was a beautiful and carefree thing, her smile. She nodded once to her trainer and they took off up the steep road. The girl had always loved riding. The saddle had been her second home ever since she had ridden her first horse. What she and her mother expected to be a nice hobby had turned into something special though. The thing that had surprised all of them was that she was actually good at it. She had a natural born talent for jumping and her physique was perfect for it. Who knew, she could've been a Olympian if not for that very day and to think if her horse hadn't spooked by the stray dog barking and if that semi truck driver had been paying alittle more attention, she could've been something great, but destiny it seemed had other plans. For she died that day as well her horse.

What was that sound? It was soft, a gentle humming in his mind and soul more than his auditory nerves. Instinctively, Vasile tried to open his eyes - and was blinded by a beaming white light. Where was he? The earth beneath him was soft, made of gentle, springy grass; the air smelled of a forest after a live-giving rainstorm. Again, Vasile opened his eyes, and remembered.
He'd died.
He began to hyperventilate, when he noticed the winged man standing at the edge of the forest to Vasile's right.

Ember woke with a soft sigh, the hazy bliss of sleep still clouding her mind for a moment longer. Her heart began to race as her memories came back. The semi. Blaze's whinnies as she lay dying. The pain that had wrecked her small body as she her own self lay dying. Slowly, she opened her eyes and was blinded by the light of Heaven. A sob was ripped from her throat and she began to cry until she spotted the man. A beautiful man at that.

Archangel Michael stepped forward, approaching the two young souls quietly. "You stand at the gates of Paradise," he said, voice as soft as a sigh. "And yet another choice stands before you. On the earth that let your soul free, evil lurks. A darkness grows, lurking in the shadows, spreading greed and hate and fear. But you, little ones, have the ability to change that, should you so desire."

Ember's eyes drifted to the boy for a moment, before her mind went to what had been her home and world. Earth. It needed protecting. If anyone could agree with that, she could. Her gaze went to her scars on her arm and she lifted her hand to the scars on her cheek. Reminders of another accident long before the one that had caused her death occur. She nodded once,"I will protect."she murmured.

Archangel Michael turned his blue gaze to Vasile. The teenager was obviously confused, hurting and scared, but something stirred within him. He nodded sharply. Michael smiled, swinging his wings forward. Gently, he pulled a feather away from each wing, stepping forward to Ember. Without speaking, he placed the white feather in her hair, and turned to Vasile, doing the same with his last feather. "Ad vos Vasile ego opitulari Skin elit. Det vobis invenire quod vis inesse lupus inter te, et potestatem inter se conferunt, quod aliis animalibus munera. Det vobis invenire requiem in via."
He turned to Ember. "Quattuor vobis, gratiam curationum, largior. Incendemus et te in lucem, uti intus invenimus; ut noceat te, quoniam sanare non potest in malum modicum est in corde et in tota anima. Det vobis invenire requiem in via."
With a wide smile, he placed his hand on Vasile's right shoulder and Ember's left, and shoved them off the edge of the grassy cliff they stood on.
Vasile released a shout of panic, as the darkness beneath the Gate of Paradise. Air whistled passed him, and pain blazed in between his shoulder-blades. He struggled, instinctively trying to push away the pain - but, stunning him into a slack position, his hand hit soft feathers.
