Lulu had settled in nicely, considering. She didn't seem to be too uncomfortable as the vet and her assistant moved around in the stall, getting things set up for the x-Ray. The vet had a determined look on her face as she was working. Lulu kept her gaze on Adam, her chocolate brown eyes glazed over from the pain meds. Her ears flicked every now and again, but other than that, she was perfectly still as the pair worked on her

Adam took a picture on his phone, figuring that, if Sadie surfaced to consciousness, she'd want to know how her filly was, and he could provide proof that she was getting the medical care that she needed. He rubbed at his forehead and sighed. What a mess. He didn't have any blame to place of course. He knew it'd been an accident. It happened. It really did. It sucked, but it was racing.
[Going to bed shortly.]

[So, I have Anastasia playing and it starts out in St. Petersburg and that's where Sasha grew up and I can't help but laugh because he'd probably hate the movie so much.]

[kk]
Sadie was in surgery at the moment, mainly on organs that had been damaged from the accident. The worst of her injuries were internal; her organs, and spinal column. There wasn't much they could do for the latter, since there was so much swelling. She was lucky to be alive, even if she was just clinging onto it.

It had been nearly a month since Sadie's accident. She was still in an induced coma, as the trauma to her body was quite severe. Slowly, as her body had began to heal as she was out, the doctors finally decided to see what would happen if they let her resurface to consciousness. Slowly, after about an hour of waiting, Sadie's eyes flickered open.
All she saw at first was blinding white light from the lights overhead, until her eyes adjusted, and then she saw the sterile walls and ceiling of her hospital room. The distinct smell of chemicals and medicine clung to her nose, and her eyes fluttered open and closed repeatedly. It took the injured jockey a little bit to get her bearings, and decide on where she was. She finally concluded that something had happened, and that she was in the hospital.
It took her even longer to feel any sensation. After her realisation on where she was, she could feel the thrum of the machines from nearby, their beeps echoing against her skull. She could feel the scratch plastic from the tube down her throat, and suddenly, the white hot pain coursing through her veins. She flinched, making a guttural sound as her fingers twitched, eyebrows furrowed in concentration. After an eternity of struggling to regain control of her arm, she managed to pull her respirator out, gagging slightly as she set it on her chest. She struggled to breathe, her lungs on fire as she closed her eyes, trying to calm her now racing heart.

Adam was back at Cross with Charlie. Over the past month, he would occasionally visit, but only rarely brought his daughter along. He didn't want her to really see her mother like that, because he didn't think she understood what it meant when her mother wasn't waking up or responding to her cries. Still, he couldn't just ignore Charlie's desire to see her mother now and then. He had one weekend out of state, but dropped several other races. He focused primarily on doing stakes races, and exercising the horses that were necessary.
He was putting Charlie down for a nap when he received the call that Sadie was awake. He immediately sought out Fay, asking her to watch Charlie, while he drove back an hour or so to the hospital where Sadie was. She hadn't been well enough to be transferred to a closer hospital, but now that she wasn't in a medically induced coma, she might be able to be moved. It'd certainly make things easier. He wished he had checked in on LuLu before he left, but didn't think about it until he'd been driving for twenty minutes.

One nurse had ostracized Sadie for taking her ventilator out. Though, the nurse just replaced it was nubbins for her nose, to help her breathe easier. After that, Sadie was sort of awake, sort of asleep. Her hands would twitch ever so often, and she would flinch, or wake up again, forgetting where she was. It was rather tortured, and even though, she was doped up on heavy duty pain-killers, she was still in agony.
It felt like every part of her body was being pricked by needles. It took nearly everything not to cry out in pain. Just a few minutes before Adam arrived, Sadie was officially awake. She had mumbled a few things to a nurse that had asked her how she was feeling, other than that, she just stared transfixed on a tile in the ceiling, eyebrows furrowed and eyes glazed over.
LuLu, on the other hand, was doing pretty well, considering she had a broken front leg. She was a bit stir-crazy in her stall, but she rested enough that it wasn't that big of a deal. But she was incredibly moody, to the point where she was biting people and drawing blood. She was not the same sweet filly she had once been.

Adam, already used to such foul moods thanks to Gallant Marines, dealt with LuLu like her temper was nothing. He didn't let her push him around. If she tried biting him, then she didn't get to come out of her stall for a gentle walk or to hand graze for a few minutes. She didn't get love and rubs either, until she would settle down. Still, Adam had a recent picture of her resting in her stall, just in case Sadie needed a picture as proof that she was alright.
Adam eventually pushed into Sadie's room, settling himself into the seat by her bed as he had done over the past month. "You're awake now." He observed. "Got the call. Charlie's back home with Fay." He said. He didn't think she was even focusing on what he said. He didn't really recall much when he'd first regained consciousness after his own accident. He'd stayed awake for only minutes at a time, and couldn't seem to focus on anything while on painkillers.

Sadie hummed something to Adam when he came in, like words were stuck in her throat and she couldn't speak properly. She looked frustrated for a moment, eyebrows knitted as a crease formed on her forehead. She let out a long sigh, glancing at her heart monitor. She turned her meager attention back to Adam, as she studied his face.
"Hi." Was all she could muster, it sounded more like a scratch to the air than anything else. Her throat was dry. She reached a hand up tentatively to scratch at her IV, eyes annoyed. It felt like her skin was crawling with that thing stuck in her arm. At the mention of Charlie, Sadie's eyebrows furrowed again. She looked rather confused at the mention of a name that didn't sound entirely familiar. To be honest, memories were all jumbled up in her head at the moment, and the past year or so was extremely fuzzy. She closed her eyes, trying to focus through the fog in her mind, but she just couldn't.

Adam excused himself for a moment before fetching a glass of water for Sadie. "Here, this'll help." He coaxed gently, holding the glass in one hand and carefully supporting her head in the other. "Just a few sips at a time, okay?" He was calm as he lifted the glass to her lips briefly. He was wary of her trying to drink too fast and perhaps choking. That wouldn't go over very well. He would probably only stay for a little while. There still wasn't much he could do for Sadie. He was better off back at the facility, ensuring that Charlie and LuLu were fine.

Sadie cooperated, though, she winced when he gently touched the back of her head. Everything hurt. She made a soft noise in the back of her throat before sipping a few ounces and turning her head slightly away, eyes wide. It soothed the dryness there a little bit. One corner of her mouth twitched slightly in gratitude, before she glanced away. She felt pathetic, lying there, barely able to move. What the hell was wrong with her? Her gaze fell back on Adam's face as she tried to gauge his expression. "Ughhhhnnn... This sucks." She managed to croak out, her voice still dry and raspy.
