General Statement
Sun Bleached Ranch is a horse ranch located in Bass Town, Florida that the founder and owner, Min Chance, made for teens in love with horses to come and live.
Bass Town
Bass Town [like the bass fish] is a small beach town located in Central Florida along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The majority of the population are retired folks or fishing families that have been here for generations. Most people in the town walk, but there are those that drive as well. Bass Town has a very nice clinic as well as a vets office, located right in the middle of the town. It also has a few local diners and cafe's, the most popular being the Seagull Diner, who's specialty is frying locally caught fish, though the cooks do dabble in perfecting french fries. Another place that is quite popular, at least with adults, is the Salty Saloon, the town's only bar. The owner and bartender, Bruno, does check ID's and in his two decades of mixing drinks has thrown plenty of minors out. There is only one actual store in the town, the little Stop and Shop of Pelican Street. It has groceries, clothes, and just about everything in between. There are a few small gas station stores as well, but they mostly sell candy, gasoline, and cigarettes. Another popular store in Bass Town is Buck's Bait and Tackle Shop, and Buck's wife Tillie's shop, Tillie's Tack. Buck sells all types of fishing rods, baits, and fishing hats while his wife Tillie handles all things horse, including Western and English tack, blankets and halters, fly spray, feed and treats, and already made grooming kits. The town is located right next to the beach, and several town locals rent out small beach cottages to tourists during the summer months.
The Ranch
When Min first started construction of the ranch, she bought all property within a 50 mile radius around the Ranch House, the direct center of property. The ranch yard, where all the buildings and pastures are located, is on a flat grassy area and is surrounded by a perimeter of strong fence. Trails go out in several directions, going over sandy dunes to the beach or weaving through the shallow salt marshes. Others go through the breezy woods towards the outskirts of the Ranch's property, and one or two trails lead to the swamp where students aren't aloud. No matter what trail a person is on, it will always lead back to the Ranch yard.
The Ranch House is a strong looking two story house in the middle of the ranch yard. It is a light creme color with a dark chocolate colored roof. Large windows look out from the top story, while smaller windows are on the bottom story. The bottom story contains the kitchen, the dining room, living room, medical infirmary, any closets, and Min's office. The top floor contains all of the staff bedrooms. Each carpeted bedroom contains a queen sized bed, dresser, nightstand and lamp, desk and chair, and a bookshelf. Also, attached to each bedroom is a half-bath that contains a toilet and sink, while larger bathrooms with stalls that contain showers and tubs are located on either end of the long hallways, one for men and one for women.
There are two student cabins at the Sun Bleached Ranch, the Hurricane Cabin and Tide Pool Cabin. They are like log cabins, but made out of drywall and plaster instead of logs. Each cabin has three rooms; the largest room has six bunks in it, three on opposite side of the room. Each 'bunk' is a twin sized bed with a dresser at the end. The beds are separated by nightstands. There are also two bathrooms in each cabin, one for guys and one for girls. Each bathroom has three counter sinks along one wall, with a long mirror going along the wall above the mirror. There are also three shower stalls and three toilet stalls.
The two cabins compete against each other every Wednesday. The prizes for winning that week's game could be anything from choosing the dessert for that night, getting out of chores for the rest of the week, getting to stay up an hour past lights out, or, the most coveted prize, getting to go on a midnight trail ride. The cabins have their own colors, the Hurricane Cabin's colors are a dark royal blue and black, and the Tide Pool Cabin's colors are a light neon blue and white. Each students gets a t-shirt with the cabin's name on it in it's colors, as well as a matching bandanna without the name.
The stable and barn are close to each other, and are in fact connected by a small pasture between them. Horses are stalled in the stable, which has 25 stalls, and other animals are kept in the barn when needed. The barn has 10 stalls. Equipment like trailers, plows, harnesses and buggies are kept in the large barn as well, since the 10 stalls are on one end and room for storage is on the other. Both the stable and barn have haylofts, but the barn's is much large, since it is the entire 2nd story of the barn and the stable's is only the overhang covering the stalls. Riders can throw hay over the railing of the stable hayloft to the aisle below but, because the only way into the barn hayloft is a hatch with a ladder, those who wish to take hay out of the barn hayloft must throw the hay down the way they came up. It got very hot in the barn hayloft, so a large skylight was added into the ceiling, letting in both light and air; It must be checked every night though, in case it rains.
The stable is a long building. The floors are concrete and stall floors are covered with a thick and heavy rubber grate then padded down with hay and straw to prevent injury to the horses. There are 25 stalls in all, and there are 4 larger foaling stalls towards the back. There is only one set of large doors to get into and out of the stable, and those are left open during the day. The stable has inside cross ties for grooming and washing, as well as a feed room and tack room.
There are three large pastures in all: The Foal Pasture, where foals are put with their mothers, the Stallion Pasture, where stallions are put to make sure no unwanted pregnancies happen, and the largest pasture is where geldings and mares without foals are put, also any other animals on the ranch such as sheep or cows are put in this pasture.
Each pasture is enclosed by strong, thick wooden railed fences with thin lines of barbed wire between the wooden rails. The gates are heavy iron and are always locked. The locks are horse proofed, so that even the smartest ponies can't escape. Also, there are water troughs located in each pasture, as well as one or two shelters where horses can get out of the rain or stand in the shade if they wish.
